PNP Moving to Heal Rifts Caused During Leadership Battle

first_imgKINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The main opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has moved to heal whatever rifts that may have occurred during the campaign for the leadership of the party, with re-elected leader Dr. Peter Phillips saying there would be no bloodletting.Phillips, who fought off a battle from the former 59-year-old national security minister, Peter Bunting, to win the leadership battle by less than 80 votes, told a news conference that the aim now is to consolidate the opposition party as it gears to contest the next general election against the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).“Having come through this campaign, we are mindful of all the issues raised during those 90 days, and in particular the clear message sent by the delegates [is that] ‘we want a unified party.“My opponent, Peter Bunting, and the comrades who supported him can be assured of my highest consideration and comradeship. Comrade Bunting and I held the first meeting yesterday at which we discussed a number of issues and we reaffirmed our commitment to cooperate fully for the success of the People’s National Party,” Phillips told reporters. He said in the discussions with Bunting, both parties had agreed that they will name a team led by the respective campaign managers which will meet and resolve any issues which have the potential for causing conflict. In addition, Philips said that each campaign is being dismantled and there will be no recrimination or victimization of any form even as the normal party functions.“We both agreed that our supporters should desist from attacks on other party supporters on social media or otherwise and that the party’s Code of Conduct and rules should be observed,” Phillips said, adding that the party will conduct an internal investigation into claims of vote-buying and other allegations that surfaced during the bitter campaign.Phillips, 69, who had first taken over the leadership of the PNP in March 2017, following the party’s defeat in the 2016 general election, acknowledged that his campaign had been partly funded by donations from corporate entities. He said also that individual PNP members and “persons all across the country” had contributed to the campaign, financially.“Most of all, what I valued was the number of small donations that came from people all across the country willing to give a J$20,000 (One Jamaica dollar=US$0.008 cents) here, a J$10,000 there, a J$50,000 there who contributed the greater share of what came to our campaign”, he said. But while he was not able to disclose the total amount of funds spent on the campaign, he told reporters “I’m certain we still owe some”.last_img read more

first_imgIn Caribbean News, The St. Lucia government announced it would begin the gradual re-opening of its borders on June 4, after indicating that the island has been able to curb the spread of COVID-19. Prime Minister Allen Chastanet said that he believes St. Lucia is in a “fairly good position to reopen” based on the fact that all 18 of its COVID-19 patients have recovered. The reopening of the island’s borders coincides with the reopening of major hotel chain, Sandals Resorts which have also announced that they will reopen their locations across the Caribbean on June 4th. Coming up in the newscast, new data shows over 80% of Florida’s COVID-19 deaths are seniors, St. Lucia prepares to open its borders in June and the Jamaican government apologizes for the condition of its quarantine facilities. Today’s newscast is brought to you by the Florida Department of Health; With a look at some of the top stories making the news today, May 18 across your Caribbean-American community in South Florida, I’m…for CNW 90. Now for the news in the detail In the meantime, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has apologised to Jamaicans who have been placed in quarantine and having to undergo “less than favourable conditions”. Over the last week, dozens of videos and images have surfaced on social media from Jamaicans currently in state quarantine, likening the conditions to that of a prison. Many residents have complained about the discrimination from essential workers and the food being served in the facilities. Holness said that the Government has already taken some remedial actions and is looking to rectify the situation.center_img In the meantime, Two weeks before the official start of the hurricane season on June 1, Tropical Storm Arthur has become the first storm of the year. The storm formed off the coast of South Florida over the weekend, ushering in heavy rains and a thunderstorm warning for Miami-Dade and Broward County. According to the U.S National Hurricane Center, the storm is expected to strengthen as it moves northeast towards North Carolina on Monday. As Florida begins to prepare for this year’s hurricane season, Governor Ron DeSantis has said that the state will have to rethink how to provide hurricane shelters during the COVID-19 pandemic. New COVID-19 data released from the Florida Medical Examiners Commission revealed that 83% of the state’s COVID-19 deaths have been residents aged 65-years and over. Attributed to this is the increase in deaths in the state’s nursing homes and long-term care facilities, which have doubled since the end of April. Governor DeSantis has ordered the increase in testing of staff at the facilities and the transfer of many residents to hospitals and other facilities. Overall, more than 850 residents living in these facilities have died from COVID-19, representing 44% of the state’s total deaths. To help stop the spread of COVID-19, The Florida Department of Health in Broward County reminds everyone to practice social distancing, wash your hands often with soap and water and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Live from New York: Nestor examines future of sports media and technology

first_imgI’ll be live blogging all day from the Sports Business Journal “Sports Media & Technology” Conference 2011 in New York. This is my fourth year live covering this event, which shapes the way moves to serve Baltimore sports fans in a better and more interactive way. I’m always learning about life and work and business and marketing and technology.Today will be a fun day of discovery.Follow along with me on Twitter as well @WNST.*******The first panel is about “TV Everywhere”…it’s about how we as sports fans can access our cable television and programming that we’re already paying for in our homes and get it delivered to our mobile devices.I’m finding this more fascinating every day. We ALL pay Peter Angelos for MASN and Orioles games in the summer. We pay him a LOT of money for this “right” to have Major League Baseball in our living rooms, bedrooms, mancaves, etc.So, next April, try to get that same game that you’re already paying for on your mobile device.(Here’s a hint…you CAN’T)Some people are starting to see the hypocrisy in this model across all cable television networks. The topic here today is “When will you cut the cord” and move to a mobile or tablet (IPad) as a preference for consuming sports content and live programming. Here’s question of the moment: Do you think we’ll ever abolish the monthly cable television bill and be able to buy our favorite websites/platform/content ala carte and have it delivered to whatever screen we’re watching — mobile, tablet, old-school television? Also, what sets sports aside from all other kinds of television and content programming is that it’s almost instantly disposable, unlike sitcoms, movies, reality television that has an afterlife for reruns and re-distribution. Other than watching last Sunday’s Ravens win over the Steelers, most Ravens fans don’t go back and watch past games over and over again. Except for ESPN Classic and the rare NFL game you’d wanna watch again during the week, live sports programming is worthless after the game ends.****The topic now has moved to 3D television and how it will impact sports. I saw the first-ever 3D screenings of an NFL game and it was amazing but I don’t know anyone who has a 3D set and I’m not really sure what programming they’re actually watching and how often they’re putting on those funky glasses.Have you ever seen an NFL or college football game in 3D?It’s superbadass…but feels very inaccessible to me.These executives here today are trying to figure out if there’s a demand for it in the future and how it would make money.*********The late morning panel is the one I’m most fascinated about today in New York — “Independent Digital Media Outlets — Leveraging Sports Content”It’s a panel that includes the leaders of SB Nation, Bleacher Report, The PostGame, etc. Several of these people, I’ve known for a number of years and I respect the national platforms they’re building and trying to galvanize local bloggers to create content. In my opinion, most of the “amateur” content is just that — amateur content.I’ve always tried to make content “expert” or “insider” content, not just someone in a basement writing about sports as a fan. Having done this for 27 years, I can tell you that there’s an ocean of differentiation between a real journalist and sports writer or broadcaster and someone who is a  fan writing without perspective, intelligence and experience that I as a self-considered expert care to read.If your opinion has no sources, no background, no true expertise, I have no interest in reading it.And I think it shows — the analysis of a truly seasoned sports expert who is working as a journalist. What do you think of amateur content that is “packaged” as expert opinion on websites? And do you find yourself returning to these kinds of sites often?Bleacher Report?SB Nation?Yahoo Sports? The PostGame?Grantland?Big Lead Sports?Shannon Terry of 247Sports just said it all: “Can we hire the best sportswriters and talent in the industry and attract new readers, users to our website and platform?”That’s what we’ve tried to do at and that’s what the national players are doing…Another great Terry quote: “The internet exposes you…are you aggressive, accurate, timely, relevant?” The internet and the users will tell you whether you are. Facebook and Twitter will give you an honest evaluation of your relevance.*******At least I know I’m thinking the right way at panelist is talking mobile for sports media technology. Many platforms are getting 30% of their traffic from Iphone & Droids. They are debating the value of overinforming on Twitter or Facebook vs. getting direct traffic via their website. Using social media as a breadcrumb and then finding sponsors and advertisers to support the platform so they can afford to pay talent and content creators.Very interesting day thus far…lots of food for thought.I’m always trying to find better ways to bring instant Baltimore sports news and information to your on your phone. If you have any feedback for how you use WNST, please drop me a note: [email protected] MORE TO COME ALL DAY FROM NEW YORK…last_img read more

‘Psyche of Champions’…William Hill announces shortlist for Sports Book of the Year 2017 award

first_img StumbleUpon Gamesys tops list for GambleAware Q1 donations July 10, 2020 Submit SBC Magazine Issue 10: Kaizen Gaming rebrand and focus for William Hill CEO August 25, 2020 Share Share William Hill accelerates transformation agenda to overcome COVID realities August 5, 2020 Related Articles William Hill has announced the seven books which have made its  ‘Sports Book of the Year’ 2017 award shortlist, the most prestigious prize in English sports literature. The bookmaker’s diverse ‘final seven’ encompasses swimming, football, cycling, boxing and horse racing and are united by the rich and complex history running through their titles and storylines. The SBOTY 2017 shortlist features three football accounts, with David Bolchover’s ‘The Greatest Comeback: From Genocide to Football Glory’ portraying the remarkable story of Holocaust Survivor Béla Guttmann who would revolutionise football, becoming the game’s first ‘superstar coach’.Coaching grandeur is further acknowledged by Ian Herbert’s ‘Quiet Genius: Bob Paisley, British Football’s Greatest Manager’ which depicts how Paisley converted Liverpool FC into a European football powerhouse.SBOTY 2017 will feature its first ever crowd-funded book in ‘Breaking Ground: Art, Archaeology and Mythology’. Composed by the literary trio Neville Gabie, Alan Ward and Jason Wood, ‘Breaking Ground’ is a collection of essays which seeks to uncover the mystery the ‘lost’ place of Bradford Park Avenue football club. Two female authors make William Hill’s final seven, with Swimming historian Jenny Landreth’s ‘Swell: A Waterbiography’, which pays homage to the 1900’s ‘Swimming Suffragettes’ who fought for women to have equal rights through access to sport.Ami Rao’s heartfelt biography of Irish jockey Declan Murphy ‘Centaur’, recounts the journey of the jockey’s miracle recovery from riding injuries so bad that he was presumed dead. The character and psyche of champions is a core theme throughout SBOTY 2017 shortlist. ‘Ali: A Life’ by Jonathan Eig uncovers the personal traits, peculiarities and flaws of heavyweight boxing behemoth Muhammad Ali through 500 interviews conducted with close associates of the legendary boxer. Completing the SBOTY shortlist is Andy McGrath’s ‘Tom Simpson: Bird on the Wire’ which depicts the raw and tragic story of cyclist Tom Simpsons during the 1960s in which he became the first Briton to win the elite men’s World Championships and to wear the Tour de France’s Yellow Jersey.Graham SharpeCommenting of the final seven, William Hill Chairman of Judges and co-founder of the Award, Graham Sharpe, said: “Creating a shortlist from a Bookie Prize longlist has never been less than a mind-scrambling task. However, such is the nature of prizes that where there is delight there must elsewhere be a disappointment, and the expert panel was enthralled by the final shortlist.“Never have we created a list including a dead-man walking, let alone riding; never had we even heard of a ‘waterbiography’, let alone a tide-turning tale of swimming emancipation. Football archaeology ever featuring as the theme would have been at least a 50/1 shot. Then there’s the previously unknown, almost miraculous tale of Holocaust survival up against the now legendary story of a British cycling superstar who died during a race, and whose reputation is enhanced every time a Chris Boardman, Chris Hoy, or Chris Froome triumph comes along. And then there is perhaps the ultimate contrast, between one of British football’s quietest and most modest over-achievers who virtually hid his light under a bushel, and world sport’s loudest and greatest practitioner, whose finest, quietest moment was when he fought his body’s unfamiliar frailty to light the Olympic flame.”The William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award is the world’s longest established and most valuable literary sports-writing prize. As well as a £29,000 cheque, this year’s winning author will receive a free £2,500 William Hill bet.The winner of the William Hill SBOTY 2017 will be announced at an afternoon reception at BAFTA, in central London, on Tuesday 28th November.last_img read more

SBC’s on the ball: Reds set to top the Deloitte Football Money League

first_img From sponsorship to the ever-expanding world of football media coverage, when it comes to the business of football, SBC has you covered. This edition breaks down the financial results of Manchester United, and looks at why the amount of football broadcast on television will almost certainly increase.____________________Record revenue and record costs in latest Manchester United financial results Announcing financial results for the 2018 fiscal first quarter, Manchester United revealed not only record incoming revenue, but also record outgoing costs. Heavily aided by a return to the Champion’s League, United recorded an increase in TV rights revenue which increased by 31 percent to £38.1m.Staggeringly, the revenue of United in just the first quarter of the financial year was greater than the yearly revenue recorded by five Premier League teams. Furthermore, the transfer spend of the club has increased rapidly since the departure of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with United spending more in the four years since the Scotsman’s departure, than they did in the 27 years he was at the helm. In the corresponding results of last year, the Brexit vote had played a key part in the club’s increasing levels of debt. However, in the latest set of results the club reported that the debt fell to £268.1m, a 20.6 per cent decrease compared to the same period in 2016, down from £558.9 million when the Glazer family first brought the club, although it shouldn’t be disregarded that the figure reached a peak high of almost £800 million in 2015, something that at the time sparked mass protests amongst the club’s fans. United also retained status as a dominant force in social media, reporting an 11% increase in overall social media interactions and remaining as the most interacted with club on Twitter,  with 16.5m likes and retweets in this period. Following on from the release of the results, United extended the already extensive portfolio of partners the club boasts, with the announcement of its 65th official club partnership, with Melitta becoming the Red Devils official European coffee partner.Extending the football feast to Saturday nightAfter a unanimous agreement by the League’s chairmen, within the next Premier League broadcasting deal the number of games shown live on TV is likely to increase from 168 to a possible 210 games, with the the league contemplating the idea of Saturday night football. The expansion means the Premier League will almost certainly strengthen its spot as the richest league in the World, with it having already confirming to Ofcom that the number of games would increase to at least 190 as part of the next deal. The meeting that led to the agreement over the increase in games broadcast represents the first time that all 20 Premier League clubs have come together since the dispute over whether the big six should be granted a greater share of foreign TV money. Price of Football proving problematic for young fans, BBC study findsA Price of Football study, conducted by the BBC, found that four in five young football fans viewed cost as an obstacle to attending football matches in the UK – despite the fact that the majority of ticket prices have either been frozen or reduced.BBC Sport asked more than 200 clubs across the country for information on ticket prices and found almost two thirds of price categories have been reduced or remained the same across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In a separate poll, 1000 18-24 year-old UK-based fans were asked how they engage with football, with 82% claiming the cost of tickets was an obstacle to them going to more matches.PSG chairman implicated in ongoing FIFA trialParis Saint Germain Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi was in secretive negotiations to take over a sports marketing company accused of paying football officials millions of dollars in bribes, a federal court in New York heard on Tuesday. It was revealed that Al-Khelaifi was in negotiations to buy out the firm, but the deal was abandoned after the owners had been indicted in the US after a dramatic police raid on their Zurich hotel. The trial began on 14 December, with three former South American football officials accused of corruption as part of a major US inquiry. The men – Jose Maria Marin, Juan Ángel Napout and Manuel Burga – have been charged with racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering.Everton outlines ambitious new stadium plansAfter securing a 200 year lease for the land at Bramley Moore Dock, Everton look set to go ahead with plans to build a new  state-of-the-art 50,000 seat stadium. A statement on Thursday stated: “Everton Stadium Development Limited (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Everton Football Club) and Peel Land and Property (Ports) Limited have formally signed an agreement for the Club to lease land at Bramley Moore Dock, Liverpool Waters.“The lease, which is conditional upon gaining planning consent for the proposed new stadium and securing funding for its construction, will run for a period of 200 years at a peppercorn rent.“The signing of the agreement is a significant milestone in the project and means Everton effectively now controls the land upon which a new stadium would be built. This follows several years of searching for a new site and is the culmination of an exhaustive search across the city.”_________________The Betting industry’s relationship with Football and its wider stakeholders will be discussed at the ‘Betting on Football 2018’ (#bofcon2018) conference.
