Dangers of NATO’s intervention in refugee crisis

first_imgThe intensity and dangers of the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa have caused hundreds of thousands of refugees to flee from their homelands in desperation every month.NATO warship in the Aegean Sea.European television and YouTube show who is fleeing: infants; toddlers; children; pre-teens; women, some in the last stages of pregnancy; people with disabilities who are in wheelchairs or on crutches; and men of all ages, from the young and fit to the elderly and frail. They are coming off the boats on the Greek islands or are piled up in Athens ferry terminals, public parks or are under tents in the rain and mud at Idomeni on the Macedonian-Greek border.  According to figures released by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), 38 percent of the arrivals since Jan. 1 are children, 21 percent are adult women and 41 percent are adult men. These percentages didn’t change much from 2015.They are not people who would spend a lot of money — sometimes all they have — to take the risk of suffering a serious accident or dying to travel long distances under harsh and nasty conditions, if there were any safe, realistic alternatives. The number of migrants who entered Europe in 2015 through the Aegean Sea’s Greek islands — many of which are extremely close to Turkey — is slightly over 1 million; 92 percent came from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Nearly 450,000 migrants landed on the Greek island of Lesbos last year.  As of March 23, some 149,208 migrants have entered Greece this year. The European Union’s decision to send all refugees who land in Greece back to Turkey if they came after March 20 has created chaos.Oxfam denounced this development as “an offense” to Europe’s values. Other nongovernmental organizations said that the mass expulsions that they foresee happening violate international law. The NGOs have to get permission from the police to enter the new detention centers that Greece has set up for the migrants. The UNHCR, Doctors Without Borders (Medicins sans Frontieres), Save the Children, Oxfam and other well-known NGOs have withdrawn their operations in Greece and the Aegean Islands, or they plan to do so soon.  Adding to the complexities and confusion around the migrant issue, Turkey’s government indicated it would cancel the deal if its citizens do not get the right to travel to the EU without visas by the end of 2016, an arrangement which was part of its deal with the EU.The Greek Communist Party (KKE) issued a statement on March 8 that pointed to the causes of this crisis: “the wars and interventions unleashed by the USA, NATO and the EU in the wider region of the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa.” The KKE says “The victims of wars, interventions and reactionary regimes have the right to seek a safer life in other countries.” (inter.kke.gr) The anti-imperialist statement says that the only permanent solution to these crises is the overthrow of the exploitative system that creates them. The KKE sees NATO’s intervention in the Aegean Sea as “using the refugee issue as a pretext” to prepare for other interventions in the area, in Syria and in other countries, which “will sharpen the problem of the refugee flows.” It could also, says the KKE, open up the possibility of abolishing Greece’s sea borders. As long as the misery and suffering that U.S. and European interventions create throughout the world intensify, the flow of refugees to what they see as “safe havens” will continue. Mass expulsions and the closure of borders will direct human migration into different directions — but besieged people will continue to seek safety, as is their human right.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Confusion over new hot food tax

first_imgGreggs has seen a £20m drop in value as the government announced its plans to apply a standard rate tax of 20% to hot food products. The high street retail bakery saw its share prices decline by 4% to 528p on Wednesday (21 March), after details of the new VAT rules were outlined in the Budget by George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer.A consultation document entitled ‘VAT: Addressing borderline anomalies’ described the move to tax hot products such as pies and pasties, which will take effect as of 1 October 2012.Mike Holling, chairman of the National Association of Master Bakers (NAMB), has labelled the new VAT rules as confusing for UK retail bakery businesses. He said: “This could have quite an impact on the bakery industry. Confusion is going to linger over this new tax on hot foods, such as classifying what ambient temperatures are.“There’s so many grey areas to this, for both companies and their customers, and in an already challenging time on the high street.”Holling added that the move could be a hidden agenda of the government as a means of stopping customers from purchasing baked goods that could be deemed unhealthy. “The bakery industry is an easy target in this instance and if this is the case I would have to disagree. We have done a lot of hard work as an industry, and at the NAMB, with the Food Standards Agency when it comes to salt reduction.”The Budget document read: “VAT will also apply, to the extent that it does not already do so, to the sale of hot food, cold food consumed on the supplier’s premises.”Closing date for comments have been set for 4 May 2012.last_img read more

Proverbs 3:27 at work as Ohio agricultural relief efforts head to Nebraska

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Matt ReeseDo not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. That is the very clear message from Proverbs 3:27.It can’t be certain this verse is top of mind for the many in Ohio’s agricultural community who are dropping what they are doing to donate, travel, work, and serve their fellow farmers across the country, but they certainly are demonstrating it.Terrible flooding in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri has left farms swamped and devastated generations of work on the land in recent weeks. One Ohio group of six tractor-trailers and 11 trucks and trailers filled with food, clothes, hay, feed, and hygiene products donated from farmers, businesses and church leaders from the Norwalk, Monroeville, Ashland, and Mansfield areas left earlier this week for Verdigre, Neb. An additional group from Ohio plans to leave next week. Another group leaves March 29 in an effort being organized by Greg and Rose Hartschuh in Crawford County through Ohio’s Rural America Relief.“Last week we were watching these videos from Nebraska and the bomb cyclone with snow and blizzard-like conditions and rain and ice chunks with flooding and saw a lot of people hurting out there,” Rose said. “A lot of places just looked like an ocean. It is on a day-by-day basis. Every day they are opening up more roads. I read a story about a farmer out there. It usually takes him 20 minutes to get to his cattle but now he is going 200 miles round trip just to take care of his cattle.”The Hartschuhs decided it was in their power to act, and this is not the first time.“In 2017 wildfires ravaged Kansas and Oklahoma and that part of the country and my husband and I wanted to do what we could to help. It kind of snowballed from there and we ended up organizing quite a bit of hay and a good group of volunteers to head out,” Rose said. “We started kicking around the idea again. Should we do something? It took a little longer to decide this time because it did end up being a pretty big effort last time. We learned a lot from Kansas. From the beginning we said we are going to help but we are going to do it in a different way. One of the differences is that hay is harder to come by in Ohio this time. We also know that fuel costs for hay are expensive to haul it across the country.”The Hartschuh group will include 10 trucks and trailers filled with supplies and 30 volunteers going to help lend a hand.“Fencing is a huge need, as well as just people to help. They are talking about corn stalks a couple of feet deep in some areas. All of that is going to have to move before they can even think about planting,” Rose said. “We set up several different drop-off locations around the state for supplies and of course you can always give cash. Nebraska Farm Bureau has a relief fund set up and that money goes directly to the farmers impacted. Our group is also taking cash and we’ll use that to help defray our travel costs. We are estimating our costs will be around $5,000. If there is anything left we will give it to the Nebraska Farm Bureau fund.”Included in the group are six senior FFA students from Wynford.“They are really going to have a unique experience,” Rose said. “This is the kind of trip that can really change your perspective on a lot of things.”The group is meeting in Tiffin early March 29 and headed west on I-80/90 to Schuyler, Neb. On Saturday, the supplies will be delivered to the North Bend, Neb. area. Volunteers will help with cleanup over the weekend and return to Ohio on Monday. Those interested in donating to the effort can go to PayPal to [email protected] or use the link: https://PayPal.me/RuralAmericaRelief. Checks can be made to Ohio’s Rural America Relief and mailed to 6348 Parks Road, Sycamore, OH 44882. Any funds that are left after the trip will be donated directly to Nebraska Farm Bureau. Follow along this weekend on the Ohio’s Country Journal and Ohio Ag Net Facebook page.Hats off to those willing to act when they have the power to do so and carry out the spirit of Proverbs 3:27.last_img read more

Source of money given to 3 suspended Buckeyes remains unclear

The numbers aren’t adding up for sophomore Corey Brown, junior running back Jordan Hall and defensive back Travis Howard, who each received $200 at a charity event and will now miss their second consecutive game for Ohio State. The source of the money received by the three players remains unclear, according to documents that were released by the athletic department on Thursday evening. One former member of the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions declined to comment on the specifics of OSU’s recent suspensions, but did say that similar circumstances could lead to a new NCAA investigation.  Brown, Hall and Howard’s name are redacted in the NCAA and university documents that were released, but the documents did say that interviews with current student-athletes revealed that they were invited to attend the charity event by former student-athletes whose names are also redacted. There are also discrepancies among the players regarding who they received money from and why they were receiving it. Two players said believed they were receiving money for working the event while the third player said he was receiving money from a former student athlete, according to the documents. In a letter dated Sept. 1, Doug Archie, OSU’s associate athletic director for compliance, said to Jennifer Henderson, the NCAA’s director of student-athlete reinstatement: “All of the current student-athletes incorrectly believed that their participation in the event had been approved by the OSU compliance office. The OSU compliance office did not approve participation in the… 2011 event, but did approve the same event (in 2007 and 2010). “Please note that there was nothing impermissible about the event.” At least two parties also indicated that one party involved in the money exchange was seen carrying several envelopes during the charity event.  Josephine Potuto, a University of Nebraska professor in constitutional law, served on the NCAA Committee on Infractions from 2006–08 and chaired the committee in 2007 and 2008. Potuto would not comment on any specific facet of OSU’s recent suspensions, but did say that, generally, it was unlikely that the NCAA would admit further evidence against a university after a hearing has been held. OSU held its hearing with the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions on Aug. 12 and is still awaiting the committee’s final ruling. “Any violation committed by an individual student-athlete is also an institutional matter because institutions only deal through people,” Potuto said. “So, another investigation could be opened. Generally, the NCAA and the Committee on Infractions won’t re-open a case after it has held a hearing with the institution. “ Mike Doss, a safety for the Buckeyes from 1999-2002 and member of OSU’s 2002 consensus national championship team, was preparing for his Friday induction into the university’s athletics hall of fame moments before the athletic department announced the continuation of the three players’ suspensions. Doss said he wished the current OSU squad well despite its recent troubles. “I hope they do great,” he said. “I hope they win them all and knock them down and show the country that, no matter who’s the head coach, there’s still great football in Columbus, Ohio.” From from his Twitter account, @Jordan_Hall7, Hall said at approximately 8:30p.m. Friday, “Killin’ me not to be out there ..good luck to all my homies tho.” The Buckeyes continue their season on Saturday with a noon game against Toledo at Ohio Stadium. read more

Neymar approved Tuchels decision to punish Mbappé

first_imgWhen asked if he was okay with Thomas Tuchel’s decision to punish Kylian Mbappé, Brazilian Neymar shockingly approved of it after the match. We discussed how last Sunday, Kylian Mbappé was reprimanded by manager Thomas Tuchel for arriving late to the match against Marseille and Neymar’s reaction after the game was quite surprising.Contrary to what some people may think about Neymar’s life outside of the pitch, the Brazilian is a very disciplined player when it comes to fulfilling his responsibilities as the PSG star and he applauded Tuchel’s decision to punish both Mbappé and Rabiot for the same reason. This reaction might come as a surprise for the French youngster, who is a very good friend of Neymar and he possibly didn’t expect this statement from one of his biggest supporters inside the club. When asked about the manager’s surprising decision to leave both players out of the starting eleven in a crucial match like last Sunday’s against Marseille, Neymar surprised everyone by telling the press that: “This is a matter between the manager and the players,” said Neymar to the press via Diario Sport.“But I do think that they must respect the schedules, and they failed all of us in that part. They know that they need to be responsible because they are great players, both of them are very important for the club and people suffer if they are not present.”PSG, Neymar, Ligue 1PSG ultras sent a warning letter to Neymar Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Brazilian superstar Neymar might play today his first game of the season for Paris Saint-Germain and the team’s ultras have warned him.“But I repeat, this is an internal matter. After everything happened, Kylian got in and solved the match for us,” he concluded.🆕🎥@Dugout @KMbappe’s mad dash, @neymarjr’s dribbling 😱👉 See more: https://t.co/bj4GHsCQG4🔴🔵 #AllezParis pic.twitter.com/i1TgaFyVJA— Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) October 29, 2018last_img read more

Rossi was surprised at Sir Alex Fergusons graciousness

first_imgDuring his training time at Manchester United, Italian Giuseppe Rossi revealed that he had lunch with Sir Alex Ferguson and something surprised him.As an Italian player who had a bright future ahead of him, striker Giuseppe Rossi has enjoyed a fairly successful career and a big part of it is the guidance he had from legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. The Italian player has been training with the Red Devils under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who recently confirmed that the club is not really looking to sign him during the transfer window but they are delighted to have him on the squad.Rossi grew up through the Manchester United youth academy thanks to Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to sign him from Parma when he was a teenager, but he was sold to Villarreal in 2007 so he could continue his career as a professional.Rossi holds no grudges with the Scotsman, he actually revealed that both of them had lunch together recently and he was surprised when the former manager spoke to him about the time when he was sold to the Spanish club.Rossi was stunned when Ferguson even revealed the sum of money that the ‘Yellow Submarine’ paid for him, as he never imagined that ‘Fergie’ would remember.Giuseppe Rossi entrenando con el primer equipo del Manchester United.Pero… ¿Por qué? We were talking and talking and he still remembers the transfer fee when I got sold.”“Just think about it: it was 11 years ago and in that 11-year span there have been hundreds of transfer fees, and he still remembered my transfer fee when I went to Villarreal.”“It’s great to see him in high spirits and great to see him just being about here on the football field.” “I just love this game,” he added.Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedSolskjaer praises Harry Maguire after Man United’s 1-0 win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Harry Maguire for praise after helping Manchester United keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Leicester City.“I sacrificed so much in these years, I’ve had many highs, I’ve had a few lows with these injuries that have taken a lot away from me but I never stopped.”“I always want to keep trying to achieve, keep trying to achieve, keep trying to get better and I just love this game so much that nothing’s ever going to take me away from it.”“It’s a part of me and I want to keep fighting and keep doing what I have to do in order to be where I want to be.”’It was 11 years ago and in that 11-year span there have been hundreds of transfer fees and he still remembered my transfer fee when I went to Villarreal.’ Giuseppe Rossi says Sir Alex Ferguson is ‘the best manager who ever lived’ #mufc https://t.co/ln8bzR8R7d— Man United News (@ManUtdMEN) January 17, 2019The Italian striker has been getting ready in order to find the best possible destination in order to continue his career, he is only 31-years old and he truly believes that there is still a lot of roads to cover in the veteran years ahead.During his best years as a professional, Giuseppe’s best years were undeniably at Villarreal and then he also made a big impact while playing for Fiorentina.Rossi played all of last season for Genoa but he hardly participated in the club’s Serie A season, something that pushed the board of directors to not renew his contract for one more year. The latest gossip was placing Rossi as a possible transfer for Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur, but the North London club hasn’t mentioned anything in public about the chances the Italian has of playing for Spurs for the rest of the season.Rossi has also been linked to several MLS clubs, but he considers that such a decision should come when he doesn’t feel like he can perform at the highest level and he is already thinking about retirement. We will obviously keep you all posted about what Rossi decides in regards to his future.Giuseppe Rossi on Man United and OGS. 🔴🙏🏼 #MUFC pic.twitter.com/StZ724pn9P— Manchester United (@ManUtds_News) January 17, 2019Where would you like to see Giuseppe Rossi play next?
