Kolkata: The height bar of Dunlop flyover collapsed early on Saturday morning after it was hit by a vehicle. The incident caused traffic congestion in the area for a few hours.According to Barrackpore police, the situation was brought under control in the afternoon. The “health condition” of the Dunlop flyover was under inspection that is being extensively carried out by various state government agencies. The Bengal government started the “health” check-up of the bridges after a portion of the Majerhat bridge caved in on September 4. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeAfter a thorough examination, the RITES had submitted a report saying that condition of bearings situated on the top of the pillars were not in good health and some repair works needed to be done. The report also added that in some places the bearings had been displaced. The busy flyover had been closed for all types of vehicles for the past one-and-half months, following the Majerhat incident. The height bar was constructed to restrict the movement of some vehicles and repair work was also on. It was later opened for smaller vehicles. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that a truck might have hit the height bar, eventually leading to its collapse. The truck was coming from Dakshineswar side, police said. There had been traffic congestion in the area since movement was restricted on the flyover. As a result, the vehicles coming from Dakshineswar were affected.
