Liverpool manager hails ‘outstanding’ duo after win against Man City

first_imgLiverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praised his side’s performance in the 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, in particular, the roles of Raheem Sterling and match-winner Philippe Coutinho.Rodgers opted for a line-up that did not consist of a recognised striker, with Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli on the bench, as Coutinho, Sterling and Adam Lallana operated in a front three formation. And the former Swansea boss was proved right when Coutinho scored Liverpool’s spectacular winner, and Rodgers was quick to praise the influence of the Brazilian and Sterling.“If you look at the front three they were outstanding,” Rodgers said. “Raheem Sterling didn’t score today but what a talent he is, not just with the ball, but his general understanding of the game.“How he presses and how he recognises how to press, and you saw his strength today against the likes of Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala.“The two boys [Sterling and Coutinho] in behind [the striker] have been outstanding since November. They’re very, very bright footballers who are technically very good.”And Rodgers hailed the performance of Joe Allen, who has come under criticism in recent weeks, claiming the 24-year-old was “brilliant” alongside Jordan Henderson in midfield.“I thought Joe Allen was outstanding,” Rodgers added. “Joe is a player who never gets the same credit as some of the others because he doesn’t score a great deal but that’s not his game. But his courage and composure on the ball was phenomenal and I thought he was brilliant today.”last_img read more
